Create A Winning Environment Where You Can Own Up To Your Mistakes

An Environment Of Fear

Every leader’s dream is to create a winning environment. On the other hand. Having an environment based on fear is one of the most uncomfortable places you can be. In the short term, you might get a spike in results but over the long term, you will see your business suffer. Having targets is great but being ridiculed for not hitting them is not. Making mistakes while your learning is normal but being shouted at inappropriately goes too far. In the end, the people who work within the company will start to resent what they do and the best people will soon leave.

This approach is indicative of an industrial tyrant approach of getting the best out of people. We know through studies and our own experiences that this approach does not work. It stifles all creativity and it stops everyone from working to their full potential because somewhere in their mind they’re fearful.

Fear is a powerful tool that many in leadership positions have used to benefit their agenda but the effect it has on the mind can be damaging similar to having an abusive parent or partner. They make you feel that you’re the problem and that you need them more than they need you. This environment should be avoided at all costs.

An Environment Of A Zone Of Safety

The opposite to an environment of fear is an environment of safety where you can make mistakes, you can think freely and come up with new ideas. The leaders who lead with fear will say that this way makes weak people and a loss in production but actually, it has the opposite effect.

Creating a safe environment for people to work brings out their best. Most people want to do well, want to work hard and unlocking that part of their mind will repay you back tenfold in the long run.

You can take Google for example where they allow their team to have a slotted time to work on their own projects. This has been widely talked about and has produced Gmail and Google Earth. If google was solely run on fear to hit targets there would never have been room to create.

My Take

I have used both strategies and I can honestly say that creating an environment where others are in fear of their jobs in an environment that’s toxic, mistrusting and will always bite you in the back. You can see it readily played out with countries around the world with different leadership styles.

When I created an environment of safety. People had smiles on their faces, results steadily increased and it was easier for people to own up to their mistakes and find solutions.

The question I ask you as a leader. What legacy do you want to leave behind? To be remembered as a tyrant or remembered as something great.

3 Ways To Create A Winning Environment

Create A Winning Environment Where You Can Own Up To Your Mistakes

1. It’s OK To Make A Mistake But Make Sure You Learn From It

Creating an environment where you can own up to your mistakes is an environment that will flourish. With any type of learning or making advancements with anything. Is matched with mistakes and failure. When the environment is fearful of mistakes everyone will stay comfortable to do the minimum required. The getting by approach keeps them in a job but the business will stagnate.

The same goes for parenting too. When a child is fearful of every mistake will get them into trouble. Soon the parent will find that they will never come to them with their problems and the parent will soon lose connection with the child.

When people create an environment of fear the people creating it seem to forget that they make mistakes and fail too. Having empathy for others based on your own shortcomings will go a long way to understanding how winning environments can be created.

Now it’s all good allowing for mistakes to occur but there should also be accountability within the environment. Where everyone must learn from their mistakes as well. To take pride in finding solutions and improving as an individual.

This is where you create the best version of someone. Where they are willing to push them selfs but also learn from their shortcomings too.

2. Create A Learning Enviroment

Creating an environment of constant learning will help everyone involved. When we learn we feel alive and we are moving forward. This learning environment will create a reflection of what’s gone right and wrong but also a better understanding of what needs to be done. Creating this environment comes from being open to mentors, having up to date information and having a feedback loop to learn from mistakes made.

3. Forgive People For Their Mistakes

Holding grudges in the workplace or at home can be damaging if not solved. To create a winning environment. Being able to forgive people and see it from each others point of view is crucial. A happy workplace is a productive workplace. Any workplace where politics and resentment are allowed to grow. You will see the business start to spiral downward.

Creating an environment where we forgive people for their mistakes helps everyone move forward.

How Will This Benefit Your Leadership

For anyone in a leadership position. Creating an environment where people can make mistakes will benefit you greatly. No one wants to be led by anyone who’s always on their back for every little mistake. Whereas a leader can show empathy and become more of a guide rather than the enemy. Will get the best out of the people they’re leading.

For any leader having people actually listen to you with purpose is a great sign that your leadership style is working.

This comes from creating an environment where people can flourish. Where they’ve been praised for their efforts but are supported with their mistakes and failures.

This approach matters. When you hit this sweet spot you will see that you’ve been listened to by the people you are leading. From there the person you are leading will start to perform to their highest standard.

The famous saying goes ” People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”

How Learning To Persevere Can Unlock Your Best Self

I was first inspired to write this post from a video online. Lorenzo was a young boy who was shot by a stray bullet that left him in serious condition struggling with body motor function as a result. He could have easily have felt sorry for himself and give up on life. But instead, choose to persevere.

With the injury, he had to use a walker to get around and he didn’t want this for the rest of his life. So for the first time, he took up boxing. Many around him thought it was a crazy idea but he persevered with the idea nonetheless. After 6 months of pure determination and effort, he finally could stand on his own two feet without the assistance of a walker. The progress was extraordinary.

The power of the human spirit when focussed can achieve possibilities others cannot conceive. His doctor didn’t prescribe this treatment, he had to prescribe this for himself. It just goes to show when humans apply perseverance in their life anything that seemed impossible becomes possible.

Learning To Persevere

How Learning To Persevere Can Unlock Your Best Self

This is, without doubt, a crucial part of anyone’s mental strength toolkit. Perseverance is a skill that allows you to overcome your own minds doubt, failures and shortcomings. When we don’t persevere it just opens the door to regret. The regret of not trying harder, giving up to early or just taking the easy path.

When you make a decision that you will persevere at everything that matters in your life. That is the flip of the switch in your mind that changes everything.

When I finished university my first job was in sales and I could see perseverance in action every day. There were always people who won every day and achieved their sales targets and others who did on some days.

Two people really stood out to me. Both super skilled at communication but the main difference was that on the hard days when sales were harder to come by, one persevered to come through and the other just gave up the day. This taught me the power of perseverance and allowed me at the time on my bad days to persevere to hit my sales targets.

When you apply this to everything in your life. Well, that’s just a game-changer that keeps giving back.

How To Make It A Habit

Hoping that your mind will always make the right decision to persevere can sometimes be tricky. To make perseverance a habit. You have to make it instinctive. But first, you have to plan to use it every day.

When planning my day I will add in two times I need to persevere.

This can be anything but I choose that when I’m exercising and I have a feeling that I want to give up I will persevere for an extra 5 minutes. My second choice was when I’m struggling to calm my mind I will meditate for an extra 10 minutes.

Both these challenges I set for myself allowed me to not only have a chance to practice perseverance but also teach my mind that it works in my best interest to persevere.

After months of practising when I reflect on my day, I can see that I have achieved perseverance all the time. From when I’m playing sports or just communicating my point of view.

Creating this habit is a must for anyone and quite easy to achieve each day.

The Benefits Of Learning To Persevere

Overcoming Challenges Makes You More Confident

When you have to persevere it’s always in the hard zone.

In the hard zone, it’s uncomfortable and shows to yourself that you can achieve more than you realise.

Just before you have a chance to act to persevere there is a choice to be made to give up or carry on through the pain. When we make the decision to carry on we are boosting our confidence to reach new limits.

Perseverance Will Boost Your Productivity

Without a doubt, when you choose to persevere you will boost your productivity levels. It’s that final 10% where the most gains come from you will see when you persevere.

Whist doing exercise, where the lactic acid build-up is firing, is the time to make the most gains. Perseverance finds all the gold and rewards you are looking for boosting your productivity in the process. When others are giving up you are putting in the extra work to get the job done.

You Will Develop Your Focus

When you make a decision to persevere. Alongside it, you are developing your focus. The mind is not in relax mode at this point. It’s in fight mode. Fighting for the win, fighting to prove something to yourself and fighting to show it can be done. This requires focus.

Over time your focus will develop into a key weapon to stay the course. The focus will help keep away all the negative thoughts of wanting to scream stop but it will allow you to enter a stage or zone which will put you in-game mode where you can push your mind and body to new limits.

Resilianace Will Be Built

When you are persevering it’s like going through a brick wall or you have weight behind you trying to drag you down. It’s painful but it’s making you stronger mentally. The mindset you are creating is resilience and the resistance to pain will be increased. This is a great character trait and will help you on the journey to be your best self. No path is plain sailing it’s filled with pitfalls and obstacles. having the resilience to persevere will help you become the person you want to be.

Have The Mindset Of A Winner

No matter what field of expertise you look at from sport to business. Anyone who is successful has had to persevere to get to the top. Life whether you like it or not is about competition either with yourself or with others.

To be the best footballer competing against all other technically gifted players what are you doing that sets you apart. When your doing a degree and want to be the person who gets the highest grade alongside all other capable people. It all comes down to perseverance.

This is the skill that can set you apart from everyone else and show you that you are capable of so much more than you know.
