How To Take Back Control Of Your Thoughts By Not Speaking For A Day

How To Take Back Control Of Your Thoughts By Not Speaking For A Day

Today’s article is a challenge I set myself of not speaking for a day in order to understand more about a habit I have in my life that I have little conscious thought over. After reading Dr Joe Dispenza book Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself. It opened my mind to whether the body is controlling my mind or is my mind controlling the body. When it comes to speaking when I’m in a professional setting my mind controls the body. But when I’m at home where I feel utmost comfortability my body controls my mind with automatic responses.

I have reviewed this and I would very much like to have the mind in control of the body within my home life. So I plan to go 24 hours without speaking at home. To analyse and be conscious of the thought patterns and responses I’m experiencing.

When The Mouth Controls The Mind

The reason why this is important to understand. Is when the mind controls the body it means that you have full consciousness over the decisions you make. Now every decision doesn’t need you to be present like breathing or healing of the body. But I do believe thoughts do. As our thoughts will shape our lives for good or bad.

This challenge of not speaking for a day came about because I want to have a great relationship with my family and don’t pass on any trauma to them. For example, I was noticing my frustrations with my children coming out within my speech and having petty arguments about things that don’t matter with my wife.

To continue and build any strong relationship it’s forged on communication.

When anyone gets comfortable in a relationship then we all tend to revert to autopilot and in a relationship with a partner. The actions you took on the honeymoon stage can soon wear off.

I’m very conscious of this as my parents fell victim to poor communication. I understand that this is a problem a lot of couple are facing with divorce rates at record highs.

Letting The Family Know

Of course, when I let my family know what I was planning to do they initially thought this was pretty strange like you reading might think too. But when they understood my reasons why. They came around to the idea. Unfortunately, my 2-year-old did not get the memo and was my biggest enemy throughout the whole challenge.

What I Learnt

So after 24 hours of this challenge, I learnt quite a lot about myself. But there was 2 major things that I will share that maybe can help you to understand yourself better.

How Reactive I Wanted To Be

The reason why humans are different from our closest ancestors Gorillas and Chimpanzees is that we have developed less reactive responses. As good as this is, we can definitely be triggered into reactive verbal responses.

Throughout the challenge, my 2-year-old did just that. The start of the day and the afternoon was great but by the evening as my defences are coming down and tiredness seeping through. I was succumbed to speak.

In life with unexpected events or small children for sure. Being reactive can be like a reflex of catching a ball. When reviewing our reactiveness with our past. You will find common similarities with parents or anyone who has had a great influence on you with their traits. I think my reactive traits definitely come from my parents. Especially my mother who is headstrong with Irish blood running through her veins. Often speaks without thinking when challenged or under pressure. This can get you into trouble in the long run.

This tendency to react in the household can disrupt the environment. So I plan moving forward to be more conscious of when I’m getting frustrated, stressed or angry to not give in to these emotions but to take a step back and breathe. To then go into the conversation without red mist and speak from conscious thought, not reactive habits.

The Importance of Showing Kindness In Your Speech

How To Win Friends And Influence people had a major impact on my life in my early 20s. There were many traits I needed to banish and develop in order to be an effective communicator.

Especially on my coaching side, I have learned that people don’t like the tough love approach and in the long run, will hate you for it even if it gets results. I noticed I was doing this with my own son when it came to his education.

By practising silence, I got see him from a different point of view. He was trying his best and reminding myself he’s just 8 years old. Whether he gets it today or gets it tomorrow it doesn’t matter if he resents my efforts to help him. Speaking with kindness and practising patience is a form of communication that will go a long way with the development of a child and forging a strong relationship in the process.

Overall

This was a tough challenge. Being able to speak is something we all take for granted. I have much respect for people who are deaf and have to communicate with a world that doesn’t know their language. But I believe after doing this challenge everyone should review their speech and what they say. Then ask yourself, is what I’m saying actually helping people and spreading joy or is doing the opposite? Only you will know this.

Going forward I will monitor my speech once a month making sure my mind is controlling my body and not the body controlling the mind.

This challenge has definitely helped me. I hope in some way this can help you.

Simple Ways How To Change Your Mindset From Negative Thinking To Positive Action

Simple Ways How To Change Your Mindset From Negative Thinking To Positive Action

Every day in human life there are parts that can seem like groundhog day. We have to breathe in O2 and breathe out Co2, eat and drink daily as well as going to the toilet. We repeat this action until the day we pass on to the next life. One other part of our day that we can’t get away from is negative thoughts. It can be as simple as doubting yourself or judging someone by the way they look or act. Even though you have never spoken it. That’s why there needs to be a circuit breaker in the mind to change your mindset.

We are all at fault for negative thinking, even the most positive person you can think of. The main difference is that some people live in the negative thoughts they have and halts their growth. While others quieten the negative thinking and replace it with seeds of positivity.

Like all habits, the way you think and act is a by-product of your environment. Who you listen to, what you read and where you work matters in the production of negative thinking or positive action.

Below are simple ways you can change your mindset into positive action. The benefits of health, wealth and wellbeing are strongly connected with the way we think. Creating a mindset that helps those three areas of life comes from positive thinking and action.

3 Quick Ways To Change Your Mindset To Postive Action

Write Down All Your Negative Thoughts

This might sound counterintuitive when we need to focus on positive action. But letting problems and negative thinking build up in the mind. Will only clog the mind where positivity will find it hard to break through. By writing down all your negative thoughts about yourself, your actions, your life and whatever else you can think of. You will release your mind of the weight of all your negativity.

This practice should be part of your self-care routine once a week or once a month.

The next part is the positive action. With everything you have written down, you will write down a solution for each one. For example, if you write down “I’m not smart enough” you can find a solution where you can start reading books, complete a degree, listen to a podcast and say to yourself every day “I am smart enough.”

By finding solutions to everything on your list you will start changing your personality, thoughts, habits and actions into positive ones that will propel your life forward.

By the end of it, you will feel great and have yourself the intention to grow.

Become Self Aware Of Your Thoughts

Without self-awareness, nothing can change. By practising conscious thinking you will start to recognise patterns in your life that have become autopilot where the body controls the mind.

First, you have to observe yourself throughout your day and spot when you produce negative thinking and what triggers it. You have to question whether it’s your job, spouse or living location?

Whatever it is first becoming self-aware can allow you to find ways to overcome the triggers that set you off into negative thinking.

For me, it can be as easy as reading the news. As you know 95% of news is all doom and gloom and purposely done to tap into our tribal mind in some cases.

Once I was self-aware of this. I changed my news intake to the latest scientific studies I am interested in, good news apps and sports news. This allowed my mind not to get sucked into problems that don’t concern me or affect my mindset.

I see now if it’s important enough to affect my life like a health pandemic. I will find out either way.

Create A Positive Environment

The environment you live your life in matters when it comes to the way you think. If you’re in a job, a household or social networks that are of negative thinking. They will drag you down and you will start seeing yourself thinking and talking as they do.

That’s why it’s in your control of where you work, what city you live in and whom you spend your free time with.

Creating an environment that fosters positivity makes it so much easier to fight negative thoughts and produce positive actions.

Imagine if you decided to give up alcohol or cigarettes and everyone around you drunk or smoked. It would a lot harder prospect with many more temptations challenging you to give in.

Review every part of your life and what actions you can do today that help makes it a much positive environment to be in.

Take Charge Of Your Mind

When the body controls the mind you want to hope that the habits you have formed are extraordinary. Unfortunately in most cases, it’s not. That’s why you have to be in the driving seat of your minds decision making when it comes to thoughts. Being in the passenger seat of your life keeps you on a path you have no control over.

With simple tips to start above and having the mindset of conscious thinking. You are on the way to creating a mindset that can make you happy but achieve all the things you want to achieve.
